The Central Government’s decision to conduct the Class 12th board exams has garnered mixed reactions from students and state governments. In a high-level meeting on Sunday, May 23, the Centre has proposed two options before the states as to how the Class 12th board exams are to be conducted. While one option was to have the Class 12th students write exams in only a selected few major subjects, the second option was to hold exams in schools but change the exam pattern to one that has only objective questions.
Moreover, the Union Government has also provided the states with an option to take a call on holding the exams as per the prevailing situations in the respective states. According to government sources, the major entrance exams for undergraduate engineering course (JEE Main) and medicine (NEET) will not be cancelled. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will announce the CBSE Class 12 exam dates and the mode of board exams on June 1, the government source told NDTV. As soon as they are announced, students will be able to check the CBSE 2021 exam dates on cbse.nic.in. According to sources, the CBSE has proposed conducting exams between July 15 and August 26 and the result to be declared in September.
The virtual meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in the presence of Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani and Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar.
While several states including Delhi, Jharkhand and Maharashtra has opposed the centre’s decision to conduct the Cass 12th exams, states like Karnataka argued that the exams are “crucial and an alternative assessment will not be able to do justice to the students. The Education Minister has sought “detailed suggestions” from states by May 25 on board exams 2021.
