Literate citizen is the key to the nation’s development. Literacy determines a nation’s human development potential. A high literacy rate asserts that people possess the critical thinking and communication skills needed to succeed in the workplace and advance the global economy.

What does Literacy Means?

According to the definition provided in the Indian census, Literacy is defined as “acquiring the skills of reading, writing with understanding”. Anyone aged 7 or above with the ability to read and write at least in any one language is considered a literate person.
UNESCO and National Literacy Mission have their own definition for literacy. The international definition provided by UNESCO consists of three main concepts:

  1. The ability to read and write;
  2. Knowledge of a language;
  3. The skills needed for a person to work, communicate and participate in society.

Having a basic understanding of these components makes it easier to evaluate literacy rates around the world.

Literacy Rate = (number of literate persons / population) * 100
*Persons aged 7 or above

India’s literacy rate has doubled since 2001, but the country still has a long way to go before its population truly becomes literate. However, literacy rates vary greatly between different areas of the country.

The Literacy Rate of India in 2022 is 77.7 per cent. The literacy rate in 2011 was 73%. There is an increase of 4% compared to the last census data. It still means that nearly one in four Indians remains unable to read or write (compared to about one in eight people worldwide). Kerala is the most literate state in India. The literacy rate of Kerala is 96.2%. As per UNESCO, India will achieve Universal Literacy in the year 2060.

On 8 September, International Literacy Day is celebrated around the world every year. The global literacy rate is estimated to be 86.5 per cent by UNESCO.

Ø  Literacy Rate of India in 2022 Ø  77.7%
Ø  Male literacy rate of India in 2022 Ø  84.7%
Ø  Female literacy rate of India in 2022 Ø  70.3%

The male literacy rate of India in 2022 is 84.7% and female it is 70.3%. The gap between the literacy rates of males and females is remains. Girls dropping out of schools increased due to economic difficulties. With the launch of many female literacy campaigns, the gender gap could narrow with time.

Ø  Literacy Rate in Urban Areas of India Ø  87.7%
Ø  Literacy Rate in Rural Areas of India Ø  73.5%

The literacy rate is 87.7% in urban places and 73.5% in rural.

Highest Literacy Rate in India

Highest Literacy State in India  Kerala
Highest Male Literacy State in India              Lakshadweep
Highest Female Literacy State in India Kerala

Lowest Literacy Rate in India

Lowest Literacy State in India                Andhra Pradesh
Lowest Male Literacy State in India     Rajasthan
Lowest Female Literacy State in India                              Bihar

Understanding Factors of Low Literacy in India:

  • Lack of importance to Education
  • No proper Sanitation in many Schools.
  • No proper Toilet facility. Even many reputed schools/colleges ignore such issues.
  • Dropout due to discriminations on the grounds of grade .Wherein weak students fails to understand the importance of the subjects learned.
  • Poor drinking water facility
  • Extensive Impoverishment

Why impoverished population suffer lack of education:

Socio-economic factors are the main causes of India’s low literacy rate. Poverty and gender imbalance are the two main components of socioeconomic variables. The literacy rate of women in India is much lower than that of men. Compared to men, there are more women among the illiterate. In addition, compared to the wealthy, disadvantaged people have less access to education. As a result, it is also one of the factors contributing to India’s low literacy rate.

Value small family:

It is challenging for poor parents to send their kids to school. Even the most basic things, like books and uniforms, are beyond their means. As a result, they choose sending their kids to work above paying for their education. This creates a vicious cycle.

Current Scenario:

The country is currently experiencing a reverse migration after the pandemic, with daily wage workers returning to their villages. This is yet another justification for improving the educational and technological infrastructure in rural areas. In areas where there is a significant educational gap, I believe educationalist can accomplish a lot. We can work towards a more inclusive educational system in a number of ways, including hybrid modules that go beyond traditional classrooms and teaching methods like chalk and talk, promoting computer literacy, and outreach programmes that can assist local communities in breaking taboos about sending their daughters to school.

Apeejay International School student shines at the State and National Wushu Championships

Greater Noida, 15 September 2022:Recently, Pahal Kabadwal, a Class III student at Apeejay International School, Greater Noida, participated in the State and National Wushu Championships. She secured a silver and gold medal in the Qiangshu (martial arts with spear) Group C tournament and Khelo India tournaments respectively.

This seven-year-old girl scored 6.3 points. She bagged the silver medal in the Qiangshu, Group C tournament. In Khelo India, she was the gold medallist in ‘without weapon martial arts group’.

The player in Qiangshu event has to fight using a spear. The war techniques of previous centuries are used in Wushu as a sport and discipline. There is only one round and every participant has to try to get the maximum point. If one scores less than five points, then they are disqualified. The highest one can score is ten.

Her journey to achieving this milestone began learning Wushu in December 2021. Pahal’s parents had enrolled her in the Wushu academy near her home. Eventually, she developed an interest in this form of martial arts.

Pahal at such a young age manages her studies and sports life efficiently. She is disciplined with her training regime and goes to the academy from 5 pm to 8 pm. Elaborating on her training regime she said, “I warm up and then after a water break I do running. Following which, I start with Wushu exercises as well as drills and lastly spend some time cooling down before going home. I practice for 3 hours daily. My father also joins me during the warm-up and running drills.”

She thanked the school for encouraging and supporting her when she had to visit Shimla to participate in the National Wushu Competition.

  • If India has to grow in the knowledge economy, then Foundational Literacy and Numeracy will be the first and necessary step– Rajnath Singh
  • Discussion on Basic Literacy and Numeracy (Fundamental Literacy and Numeracy) at Synergy Summit
  • New Delhi, July 12, 2022: Synergy Summit, India’s most strategic two-day summit meeting, on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), took place on 11-12th July 2022, at India International Center, Max Muller Marg, Delhi. The summit was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Abdullah Rasheed Ahmed, Minister of State for Education, Republic of Maldives, in the presence of Dr. Sunita Gandhi, Founder and CEO of Devi Sansthan, Dr. Payal Kanodia, Trustee of M3M Foundation, Dr. Aishwarya Mahajan, President of M3M Foundation, Nixon Joseph, CEO, CLT India, Alok Verma, Project Director, HCL Foundation, Thirumala Arohi, Senior Vice President, Head-Education, Training & Assessments, Infosys Ltd., Kamal Gaur, Deputy Director, Programmes Education, Save the Children and other dignitaries. Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh virtually graced the event and shared his thoughts through a video message. Today was the second and last day of this summit.

The two-day summit saw active participation and discussions on FLNby various organisations. On this occasion, Dr. Payal Kanodia, through a presentation highlighted how M3M Foundation is already working on literacy and numeracy skills through its various programmes and contributing significantly to the betterment of the country.

It is to be noted that there is still a need to work on FLN in many parts of the country and in view of this, M3M Foundation along with Devi Foundation has joined hands and signed an MOU for the implementation of FLN in 10 identified schools in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh.

Union Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh appreciating the summit commented, “There is an old saying: ‘If you want to beautify your life, you should invest in business, but if you want to beautify generations, you should invest in education’. Events such as this are an investment in the field of education, which in the form of returns will pave the way for betterment.”

Continuing further he added, “The theme of the summit is very important. If India has to grow in terms of knowledge economy and if it wants to create a knowledge society, then foundation literacy will be its first and most necessary step. If we look at the actual situation of our country, even after 75 years of our independence, due to various reasons, we have not been able to reach an ideal position in foundational literacy. Although there has been a rise in enrollment rate but we have not been able to develop basic literacy and numeracy skills to the extent that we should have been. Several statistics reflect that children of class V in rural government schools lacked foundational literacy skills and this situation has worsened in the last two years during the Covid-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need to figure out the problems and find a solution. We need similar efforts which can take foundational literacy not only to the pre-pandemic state, but beyond that. In this direction, I would like to congratulate Ms Sunita Gandhi for her concept and programme titled‘ Accelerating Learning for All’. As I have been informed that through this programme people can be made literate in 90 days, I hope a large number of people will join the initiative and come forward to support it.”

Dr. Abdullah Rasheed Ahmed, Minister of State for Education, Republic of Maldives said, “Foundational Literacy and Numeracy is the foundation of education. It is also the basis of life. It is indeed commendable that M3M Foundation has supported Devi Sansthan and will be working together. Dr. Sunita is working for many students free of charges. I believe this collaboration between M3M Foundation and Dr. Sunita will help advance and help our students in India and other countries. I thank and appreciate the contribution of the M3M Foundation to this endeavour.”

Speaking at the Synergy Summit, Dr. Payal Kanodia, Trustee, M3M Foundation said, “FLN is the key to the new education policy and the need of the hour. And with this effort we will try to make a wide impact in this district, will take this programme forward, and expand it to educate as many children as possible. I would like to thank Dr. Sunita, armed with extensive years of experience in this field. We are extremely excited to be associated with Devi Sansthan.”

Sharing her thoughts on this occasion, Sunita Gandhi said, “We are very fortunate that we have got the opportunity to work for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by the Ministry of Education in two districts where Foundational Literacy and Numeracy is at the lowest level. . We will try to take it to the national level by March 2023. Our goal is to educate children in new ways, for which we have got the support of M3M Foundation and I am sure that together we will be able to justify our work and set an example for the whole of India.”

On the second day of the summit, Dr. Aishwarya Mahajan, President, M3M Foundation expressed his views on FLN and shared ideas on taking the programme forward in Shamli district and making this initiative a success story for all.

He further highlighted that M3M Foundation has several ongoing education and skill training courses in various districts of Haryana under the Literacy and IM power programme.

Under the New Education Policy-2020, special training is given to primary teachers to raise awareness on the importance of FLN, so that students can communicate better and become socially and emotionally empowered.

FLN is a programme for access to education for children below 10 years of age, for providing every child with basic skills in their early life, through which students are able to read, write, speak and interpret. This further aids the children by providing additional support in their later stages of learning, thus becoming an imperative domain to focus on. FLN has been implemented under the Nipun Bharat Mission of the New Education Policy of government of India. The primary objective is to adopt a holistic approach for the overall development of children in the age group of three to nine years.
