With online tutoring becoming a growing trend, we need to understand the pros and cons of both classroom teaching and online tutoring.
While many educational institutions are going the virtual route, there are few institutions who still realise the benefits of maintaining classroom teaching. Research has proven that classroom teaching not only impacts the students but the teachers.

What is the current technology and issues related in using them?
1.Whatsapp Messaging
Only smartphones are supported, many people still don’t have them.
There is risk, data theft and students’ mobile numbers getting harvested.
It can be annoying sometimes due to constant messages.
Your profile picture is visible to every person having your contact number.

2.Home work through SMS or Website links
Home work through SMS and website links are one sided and there is no guarantee that everyone takes it seriously

3. Zoom and screen sharing
Recently Zoom application is in the news for all varied wrong reasons, security issues, spoofing and hacking attempts.

4.Google Suite for Education etc.
Many schools / Colleges have started using google classroom and YouTube for teaching online and giving assessments etc

  1. Lack of Training and resources
Education institutes are going about online education as an instant remedy to school lockdown. Teachers are not prepared nor have adequate training to address online teaching. Most of the teachers are trying to replicate the offline classroom online. The preparedness of adequate technical resources, student’s internet bandwidth, availability of Smart phones is the larger issue.

How to go about online training?
Teachers training is the most important factor. Training for technology leverage, choosing the right technology, content and delivery with a vision is must.

Using a Learning Management system with clear goals and deliverables are the key factors for successful online teaching.

A teacher who can be the best in delivering content in a offline session might miss it completely while in online because they are focussing more on technology and presentation rather than content.

Teacher
A teacher is a person who helps others to acquire knowledge, competences or values. The teacher will focus his or her communication on the concepts, key points, examples and exercises that the student needs to learn and practice to perform in the real world.

Using a Learning Management System.
Experts from campusone Education Solutions suggest few key points while taking your classroom online
1. Centralized Learning
2. Training and content creation support for teachers
3. Tracking and Reporting for Enhanced Performance
4. Immediate Capabilities Evaluation
5. Easy Upgradation of Content
6. Simplifying Learning Processes
7. Virtual secure server
8. G-suite for Education with edu.in

With a good learning management system, you can effectively manage sign ups/registration, users, students, courses, online content, tutors, supervisors, calendars, hours, groups, access, notifications, communication/messages, certificates and reports. A great advantage and benefit for any educational institution or business.

They offer a Learning Management system which is moodle based integrated with google suite for education with your campus.edu.in account.
They integrate and implement G-suite for education with email ids for all students/staff with adequate training to use g-suite and LMS.

As the Distance Learning is getting popular in India as well as other countries, Applications like Zoom has becoming popular amongst Students as well as Teachers.

But is the use of application is safe?

The govt’s warning comes after India’s nodal cyber security agency – Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-in) – had cautioned against the vulnerability of the app. The agency had pointed out that the app has significant weaknesses which can make users vulnerable to cyber attacks, including leakage of sensitive office information to criminals.

Still if you want to use such apps following cousion needs to be taken:

Create a new user ID and password for each meeting

  • Create a waiting room in the app so that a user will be able to enter the meeting only when the host gives him permission
  • Disable Join feature before hosting
  • Allowing Screen sharing by Host only

*Disabling “Allow removed participants to re-join”

  • It is recommended to restrict or disable file transfer
  • When all participants have joined, it has been advised to lock the meeting
  • Restrict the recording feature
  • To end meeting (not just leave, if you are an administrator)

There are many Alternatives are available which schools can adopt in the place of Zoom

Google has launched its new application Hangout Meet or Meet with advanced features of Video conferencing. Schools have now free access to Google Hangout Meet as well as google classroom

Why do we need ICT in schools? Was education not happening before computers came into existence? Why is this paradigm shift necessary?

The answer is that the shift is necessary because this is the age of information technology, an age which requires that teachers should facilitate the knowledge to the students in better ways through present technology.
In today’s competitive world the child needs the skills and information beyond subject knowledge and requires assimilation power and retentions. Over the last few decades, everything has changed in our lives with the intervention of technology.

The classrooms that our grandparents went had only Chalk and blackboard , text books, stale curriculum and a teacher painstakingly explaining abstract concepts with the limited tools at her disposal . The best of teachers take pains to explain the concepts largely depending on their own abilities.

The students listen to the teachers, try to understand the figures drawn on the blackboard and read from their text books, take notes and try hard to visualize how it happens and remember. At the end of the class, the teacher asks a few random questions to assess how the class fared. Invariably a few hands go up, the answers are given and the class ends. On the contrary.

Imagine a Science teacher explaining how cell division takes place and DNA replicates, a History teacher teaching about the Stone Age or a Geography teacher teaching the Himalayan range of mountains by actually showing them the relevant videos and animations for better understanding. Digital classrooms bring about a complete transformation in the teaching learning environment of the class rooms. A science teacher while explaining how a DNA replicates is able to show the class a 3D animation of the DNA replication process on a large screen. She can explain the fine points of the process, zoom to show the relevant visuals freeze and annotate when and where she needs to emphasize. Similarly the History teacher shows the class a virtual walk through of the Stone Age. Uncovering the relevant parts step by step as a part of her lesson plan, while the Geography teacher takes them on a virtual aerial walk over Himalayas …all with engaging animations, colours, music, sounds and voiceovers. The teacher gets complete attention and interest of every child in the class.

Every child gets a visual input on how it happens and the concepts are well understood. Towards the end of the class, teacher displays a set of questions on a large screen, every child in class gets ready to answer the questions with their personal answering device- SAS(Digital Assessment System). Students click the answers, instantly teachers are able to get a score sheet for every child in the class. She ends the class with revising the parts of the lesson that were not understood well by class.

This result is quick and accurate understanding of the concepts in the classrooms. It helps improve the overall academic performance of the students. Teachers are able to keep students interested in the learning process and also get an instant and accurate assessment of learning outcomes at the end . All this happens due to digital classrooms which is a technological initiative in teaching learning process which has already been adopted by progressive schools in India. Digital classrooms are transforming the way teachers teach and students learn in schools. It’s a new age technological initiative for 21st century learners that is fast becoming an imperative for every school. Soon it will touch every school in India.

If Digital Class education is started in most of the schools, it will be successful, if schools provide:
Trained Teachers to facilitate the learning process, make the process real, achievable, challenging yet exciting and intimidating.

Proper on the job training to senior teachers on how to use the projectors and other technologies while taking a class.

Appoint teachers who are well versed with the ICT .

Acknowledges the creativity of teachers teaching in Digital classes.

A healthy class room interaction between teacher and students in a Digital class teaching learning process

ICT has bought new communication possibilities into the classroom at the same time, it placed more demands on teachers. It needs to be effectively integrated into the formal classroom teaching and learning conditions. The ICT’s integration in classroom teaching and teacher’s education is the need of the time. ICT’s can also provide powerful support for educational innovations. By integrating a variety of media into a ‘teaching learning process’ offers learners an opportunity to understand in a better way. Thus Digital class an outcome of ICT definitely has a positive impact on teaching learning process in education.

Whether you’ve taught online a lot or a little, chances are you didn’t enjoy it as much as teaching in person. Maybe you didn’t experience the wow feeling after a face-to-face class.

Yet it can be just as rewarding as teaching in a bricks-and-mortar classroom, if in different ways. Good teaching is good teaching.

Teachers should follow simple rules when teaching online

Post a weekly announcement

Create a system to ask questions, Respond to questions posted in an online question-and-answer discussion forum or sent to you by email.

Positive approach in teaching instead of giving time based rules. For e.g instead of saying you will fail or get minus marks we can say you have tried , can I help you in finishing you work etc

Explain your expectation

Give research time for students to learn to explore, research and understand. We don’t have to explain everything as in fave to face classroom

do not replicate the offline classroom online. Students behaviour sitting in the classroom and sitting alone is two different things

You should be a mentor instead of a teacher. Mentoring is easy and produce result rather then replicating a offline teacher online

Provide share links, wiki, YouTube and material as add-on to your online teaching expectation

Zoom meeting software can be used to to teach English, history etc, but can’t be used to teach maths or science. Select appropriate tool

It’s a good practise to start introding Lms to students which is collaborative and game based.

Letter from a school principal and a teacher…..

Dear parents,

You might be inclined to create a minute by minute schedule for your kids. You have high hopes of hours of learning, including online activities, science experiments, and book reports. You’ll limit technology until everything is done! But here’s the thing…

Our kids are just as scared as we are right now. Our kids not only can hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our constant tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off of school for weeks sounds awesome, they are probably picturing a fun time like summer break, not the reality of being trapped at home and not seeing their friends.

Over the coming weeks, you will see an increase in behavior issues with your kids. Whether it’s anxiety, or anger, or protest that they can’t do things normally – it will happen. You’ll see more meltdowns, tantrums, and oppositional behavior in the coming weeks. This is normal and expected under these circumstances.

What kids need right now is to feel comforted and loved. To feel like it’s all going to be ok. And that might mean that you tear up your perfect schedule and love on your kids a bit more. Bake cookies and paint pictures. Play board games and watch movies. Do a science experiment together or find virtual field trips of the zoo. Start a book and read together as a family. Snuggle under warm blankets and do nothing.

Don’t worry about them regressing in school. Every single kid is in this boat and they all will be ok. When we are back in the classroom, we will all course correct and meet them where they are. Teachers are experts at this! Don’t pick fights with your kids because they don’t want to do math. Don’t scream at your kids for not following the schedule. Don’t mandate 2 hours of learning time if they are resisting it.

If I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: at the end of all of this, your kids’ mental health will be more important than their academic skills. And how they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during those weeks is long gone. So keep that in mind, every single day.

This is an unprecedented situation and no one really knows how long it will be before schools reopen. Luckily due to varied internet options available and wide usage of mobiles n smart phones in india learning or increasing ones knowledge is easier and simpler.

Both Microsoft and Google have announced free access to conferencing services which normally have an enterprise subscription rate during the coronavirus crisis. Parents can take advantage of this for individual or group learning as well.

Lots and lots of free resources and tools, games which allow you the learn are easily available. Like child’s play, gcompris and many more for primary students.

Scratch from MIT is also a very interesting tool to make kids to innovate, share, program, create and express by creating stories, games, animation and more. Pi Code Club a company based in Mumbai offers free tutorial on scratch.

Home learning can be challenging and parents do need to take a holistic approach. Peer group can provide lot of information, DIY and share experiences with their wards making learning a fun.

While parents may think they need to run a set timetable, you will need to be flexible to deal with things like blackouts, slow data speeds or a child who is simply not interested in learning today.

For schools who want to reach to their students while in lockdown, Campusone Education Solutions Pvt Ltd a managed service company in India uses a mixture of software to communicate between staff and with the students, including Google Hangouts, Zoom, FaceTime, Microsoft Teams

It could be a time where learning could be transformed allowing children to focus on knowledge, creativity, innovation rather than just exams and assignments .
