Pencil2D – Animation Software

Pencil2D is a free and open-source 2D animation software available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It is a fork of ‘Pencil’. The application uses a bitmap/vector drawing interface to produce simple 2D graphics and drawings as well as animation. Pencil is written in C++ and is Qt-based. It started as a simple “pencil test” program by Patrick Corrieri, extended to the current Pencil application mainly by Pascal Naidon. It was forked as Pencil2D by Matt Chang and is being developed.

Pencil2D Animation is a comprehensive tool suitable for web or art designers who need professional features to create impressive cartoons or animations. The program lets you build your animation by making multiple slides. It’s wrapped in a well-organized and intuitive layout, divided into the editing pad, the drawings tools, color palette and the timeline. You can draw using the pencil or brush whose size and feather can be adjusted using the sliders, while the color can be chosen from the palette.

In addition, you have the option to manually create shapes and fill them with different tints. You can make your own colors by dragging the red, green, blue and alpha channel sliders, and add the result to the list.

Each layer can be hidden or disabled from the timeline, while the design can be played and looped from the menu or the small toolbar at the bottom. Last but not least, the app lets you export the animation to an XML and SVG file, as an image sequence (PNG, BMP, GIF) and movie (AVI, MOV, WMV).\

The bottom line is that Pencil2D Animation is a reliable software solution that comes in handy especially for digital designers to make amazing image animations and static drawings that can contain sounds and videos using bitmap, vector, sound and camera layers.
